On Sunday, December 1, Opaline--a creative performance space centered around supporting primarily Black and Latinx artists--celebrated it’s one year anniversary with a night of performances, art and uplifting the Black community.
Opaline was started by a year ago, by Briona Butler, because she wanted to provide a space where her childhood friend and budding songwriter and vocalist, Babby, could showcase his craft.
She explained “He had been going back and forth for a while about sharing his work. I knew that he wanted to, so Opaline was my offering to make the way easier for him. It came together seamlessly and so many other artists and friends came together to support him in his moment—I realized there was no need to stop. There are so many gifted artists in my life and I wanted everyone to know.”
Since its founding, Opaline has hosted numerous “nights of iridescent sounds and storytelling,” as described by Butler. Sunday’s celebration included performances from some of the DMVs greatest up and coming artists, such as Babby, Mala Esoteric, Thraxx King and VO/ID. Rapper, AKAI SOLO, even made the trip all the way from Brooklyn to participate in this celebration. Additionally, brands and artists, such as NTUIIT, Beaded by Na, Indicut and many more, were on display and available for purchase.
When describing her feeling during the one year anniversary, Butler said, “I feel so overjoyed and full about the anniversary celebration. Everyone who stepped up in the spot was mad beautiful, so I take that as a testament to my amazing taste. I’m really amazed and appreciative about how everyone came together to make our first revolution around the sun super special— from the back drop and the photo booth, to the videographers who gave spicy ass interviews. Babby has done 30 something shows since last December, and my right hand, Monisade, just published her first book! So it warms me to to see my intention come full circle and just live within a real live dream that I built from scratch. I feel empowered and excited as I observe Opaline unfold and continue to welcome y’all into the tribe. We doin’ heaven on earth.”
