For each issue of SiKK Magazine, we will feature a “Model Call” to unveil upcoming models who we think are daring, unique inspiring. Niyah Huff (@melvnin.shrtcvke) certainly encompasses all of these attributes.
Huff is an aspiring model and actress from Elizabeth, New Jersey. She is the eldest of eight siblings, and is currently attending Howard University in order to purse her creativity.
When asked to describe her “look,” Huff explained that she always strives to appear “humble, yet confident.”
A lot of young Black girls are taught to diminish their personalities and voice in order to be more accepting to mainstream society. However, Huff believes that you can be confident without being intrusive.
“You can still be confident and know your value without being stuck up,” said Huff, “It’s really about knowing your worth and portraying that.”
As a petite, darker-skinned model, Huff is breaking ceilings with each picture she posts on social media. She proves that Black women can be creative, intellectual and beautiful, not despite their Blackness and femininity, but because of it.
To other young, Black models she encourages, “It's going to be difficult. Please be aware that there are going to be a lot of people in your field, but don’t let that discourage you. There's a place for everyone in this industry. Go for it, especially when you’re young. This is the time to chase your dreams."
